State of the Space

2019 Artist in Residence

  • Tim applied to Bravo for funding as was done the past two years, however Bravo appears to have changed to only funding cultural enrichment grants.

  • We are unlikely to receive funding from them for this.

Throwing Stuff Away - Best Practice

  • Discussion began over how best to throw things away without getting rid of important stuff. Nothing gained consensus and conversation quickly moved on.

Accepting Donations - Best Practice

  • We already turn down more donations than we accept.

  • Everyone did agree that if something is offered to the space, email the Tool Steward the item would apply to and see if we can use it.

New Intern

  • The Education Director knows someone interested in joining who would be a good fit for our intern position.

Vote to first interview the person, as has been done for previous interns. If interview goes well then accept person for intern position. He/she will keep track of the hours they work. In 6 months the board will revisit.

Result: PASSED - Person will be interviewed. If interview goes well then accept person for intern position. He/she will keep track of the hours they work. In 6 months the board will revisit.

Art Show Update

  • Because our event is small no cop needs to be hired, the money reserved for that will go towards the bar.

  • 5 volunteers are needed for set up and tear down, and to greet people at the door.

  • Please promote our ad for the event on Facebook by liking and sharing it.

  • The Eduation Director also requested help putting the event on local calendars, Brad F volunteered.

OSHA Signage Compliance

  • APEX assembled an overly-exhaustive list of signs and safety equipment to comply with OSHA standards.

  • In total we will need about $222.42 to purchase what we need.

  • Needed items include:

    • 5 fire extinguisher signs

    • 1 pinch point sign

    • 5 Exit signs

    • 3 eye wash signs and stations

    • lockout/tagout devices and tags

    • Breaker for auto lift

Vote to purchase the needed equipment and signage.

   Opposed: 0
Result: PASSED - The needed equipment and signage will be purchased.

Vacuum Former Purchases

  • Matt G made a detailed plan for how to finish the vacuum former. The total cost for parts, not including electrical components, is about $750.

  • Electrical components would come to about $150. Although we are still hopeful some of that can be donated.

  • Matt estimates it will take about 4 weekends to build.

  • On August 31 we received about $1000 from Benevity (which distributes money from John Deere's fund that gives money for employees' volunteer time. This money came from Tim's volunteer time.

  • Assuming Matt's volunteer hours are approved, we will receive another $500 in November. Tim agreed to spend the money that came in for his hours on the vacuum former and the money for Matt's hours will go for something else.

Vote to spend up to $1000 of Deere's volunteer funds on Vacuum Former.

What is Still Needed in Each Area

  • This topic was also known as "How to Spend the Rest of Our Move-In Budget."

Laser Room

  • Needs a flat wood rack. Chris says we have enough wood to build the frame. Bailey will search her garage for sheet wood to finish it.

Metal Shop

  • Needs angle irons and sheet metal for tables and to shield the wall

  • Need welding curtains

  • Not much can be done until budget is known.

Wood Shop

  • Needs piping for dust collector.

  • Needs piping for air compresssors.

  • Our air compressor has a leak that needs to be fixed. The plan is for Jerry's air compressor to power the auto shop and east wall of the Wood Shop. Our air compressor will power the rest of the Wood Shop.

  • Routing for pipes will be determined by the location of the new 5'x8' CNC machine. No measuring has been done yet so no cost estimate is available yet.

  • Because no cost estimates are available for what is still needed, this discussion was shelved for a later date.

5' x 9' CNC Machine Update

  • Reg is planning to let us use his Thermwood CNC machine. It's too big to fit through the garage door so currently we're trying to find a way to get it inside.

Board Matching Funds Policy

  • After a long email discussion, the board did not make any substantive changes to the "In for $10" policy. It remains as: if 10 members raise half the funds for something for the space, then the rest of the purchase automatically gets paid by group funds.

    • Each contributor does NOT have to give $10, 10 members just have to donate half the funds.

  • Anybody can ask the board of directors to help pay for something for the space. 10 members raising half the cost should be thought of as the way members overrule the board of directors and should be described as such.

End of Meeting

  • Paraphrased Quote of the Meeting: "It's great to see how positively people are reacting when they come into the new space."
